Text Extraction from PDFs

When you open an existing PDF, the editor automatically extracts and displays all text:

  1. Text from the original PDF appears as editable elements
  2. You can modify, move, or delete any extracted text
  3. When you export, the modified PDF reflects your changes
  4. Original text not edited is preserved exactly as it was

Handling Text from Scanned Documents

For scanned PDFs where text appears as images:

  1. Use the OCR feature to extract text
  2. See OCR & Accessibility for detailed instructions
  3. Once OCR completes, text becomes editable

Common Text Tasks

Creating a Header or Title

  1. Use the Text tool to add a title
  2. Set Font Size to 24pt or larger
  3. Apply Bold for emphasis
  4. Choose a Color that stands out
  5. Position it at the top of the page

Adding Form-like Fields

For document templates:

  1. Add text elements as labels (e.g., "Date: _______")
  2. Use a larger Font Size for readability
  3. Position labels consistently
  4. Leave space after labels for handwriting or typing

Highlighting Important Information

  1. Add text with White Background enabled
  2. Choose a Color that contrasts with the background
  3. Position over the content you want to emphasize

Watermarking Documents

  1. Add text (e.g., "DRAFT" or "CONFIDENTIAL")
  2. Use a large Font Size (36pt+)
  3. Apply a light Color or use transparency
  4. Position diagonally across the page

Tips and Best Practices

Text Readability

  • Sufficient Size — Use at least 12pt for body text, 16pt for better readability
  • Color Contrast — Ensure text color contrasts well with backgrounds
  • Font Choice — Use sans-serif (Helvetica) for digital documents, serif (Times) for formal documents

Document Consistency

  • Consistent Styling — Use the same font family, size, and color for similar content
  • Alignment — Line up text elements vertically for a professional appearance
  • Spacing — Leave adequate space between text elements for clarity

Performance

  • Limit Text Elements — While there's no hard limit, very large numbers of small text elements may slow performance
  • Simple Formatting — Stick to basic formatting for best compatibility

Accessibility

  • Use Clear Language — Write in simple, clear terms
  • Sufficient Size — Use 12pt or larger for better readability
  • Color Alone — Don't rely on color alone to convey meaning; use text or patterns

Exporting Text

When you export your document as a PDF:

  1. All text formatting is preserved (font, size, color, style)
  2. White backgrounds are rendered as actual backgrounds
  3. Text remains selectable in the exported PDF
  4. Text from OCR (marked as searchable) becomes invisible but searchable

Troubleshooting

Text appears too small or too large after export

  • Solution — Adjust the Font Size in the properties panel. The editor uses the same unit system as PDFs (points), so what you see should match the export.

Font doesn't match when exported

  • Why — Standard PDF fonts (Helvetica, Times, Courier) are used. Custom fonts aren't yet supported.
  • Workaround — Stick to the three available fonts for consistent results across devices.

Text wraps differently after export

  • Why — Line wrapping may differ slightly due to font rendering differences.
  • Solution — Use White Background to ensure text is readable, or adjust the text box size before exporting.
